This article is purely based on my personal point of view and perspective. Find below my thinking:
- Public Confidence Through Gender-Inclusive Leadership:
Over time, women in Nigeria have consistently expressed concerns about marginalization and underrepresentation in political life. In that context, the strategic comparative advantage of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s (PGEJ) election bid on a new party, particularly one chaired by a young woman signals an intentional commitment to inclusion rather than tokenism.
Such a move would strongly communicate that PGEJ is not discriminative against women, and it would likely resonate with many women who remember the increased visibility and participation of women during his administration.
- Strong Precedent, Affirmative Inclusion During PGEJ’s Administration:
It is also important to recognize that during PGEJ’s tenure, women’s inclusion advanced through affirmative engagements. In particular, a 35% affirmative agenda for female inclusivity was pursued, and women were appointed and deployed in strategic roles.
Therefore, supporting a woman as chair of a new political platform would not only be politically strategic, it would also reinforce a continuity of values while offering a renewed commitment to visible female participation.
- “Pillar of Hope”, a “bright future for all” and “thinking Nigeria first”, as a Forward-Looking Political Narrative:
PGEJ’s public image as a figure associated with hope and a brighter future for Nigerians, together with a philosophy of putting Nigeria first, creates a natural platform for a credible and modern political reorientation.
By aligning his presidential project with a youth-led and woman-led political party structure, PGEJ can present himself as a leader who embraces a new political direction: one grounded in modern governance expectations, national unity, and renewal.
- “Nigeria First” Philosophy and Non-Violence Commitment:
PGEJ’s stated approach of placing Nigeria above personal ambition, expressed in his commitment that leadership ambition should not become a justification for the spilling of blood of any Nigerian, reflects a moral and political positioning that can strengthen voter trust.
- Youth-Friendly and Gender-Friendly Appeal:
To the youths, PGEJ’s association with a party chaired by a young woman can communicate trust and respect. It signals that he is not dismissive of young people, but instead willing to elevate youth leadership.
This would likely generate stronger emotional and strategic alignment with younger voters, especially those who want political renewal rather than generational replacement only in name.
- Running on a Fresh and New Political Platform, Without Legal Burden:
Running on an entirely new party platform can be interpreted as a deliberate shift toward a clearer and more forward governance narrative, promising better approaches, renewed leadership energy, and a new political identity.
Just as importantly, it may reduce certain political complexities and complications that sometimes arise from legal disputes, entrenched party structures, or legacy political baggage.
- Humility, Experience, and Growth in Political Leadership:
A critical advantage of PGEJ’s potential bid on a new party is that it reflects maturity and reflection. Having served as President, he is not a political “fresher.” He has also had time away from office, allowing for introspection on what could have been done differently and what should now be improved.
In this way, a new party platform can position him as the experienced elder statesman who has gathered lessons, refined his political thinking, and is now seeking to provide a better path for Nigeria.
- Superior Standing, Through National and International Exposure:
PGEJ’s long-standing exposure through national and international engagements has contributed to his distinct public profile. When combined with the promise of a fresh political platform, this exposure can strengthen his appeal beyond the boundaries of factional politics.
Where other candidates may struggle with credibility gaps, PGEJ can present a clearer “evidence-based” identity rooted in real experience.
- Campaign Strategy as a Fusion of Party and Professional Organization:
In an election environment, effective campaign structures typically reflect the fusion of the political party’s grassroots energy and an organized campaign team of professionals skilled in strategy, messaging, rhetoric, and mobilization.
A new party platform chaired by a young woman could bring renewed energy into this campaign architecture, promoting a modern narrative and an updated appeal to undecided voters.
- Political Neutrality and Conflict-Resolution Credibility:
Another advantage is that running on a new party can help PGEJ further establish his image as a neutral elder leader, not trapped inside internal party conflicts.
This approach can portray him as someone who intends to rise above factional disputes. His past experiences in conflict resolution and political reconciliation to unify stakeholders under a new single, credible umbrella can help achieve adequate peace.
- Humility and Readiness to Win on a New Terrain:
Running on a new political party should also be viewed as an act of humility, not undermining the abilities of his political project, his capacity and popularity, but rather, demonstrating confidence that his leadership can succeed even on a new platform.
This could strengthen public perception of his acceptability and popularity, while also reassuring voters that his leadership appeal transcends party labels.
- Broad Regional Appeal and Constitutional Voting Requirements:
PGEJ’S presidential bid supported by a credible, nationwide narrative can resonate across Nigeria’s diverse geopolitical zones, including North Central, North East, North West, South East, South South, and South West.
With PGEJ’S strong national visibility and acceptance, it is possible to secure the constitutional expectation of achieving at least 25% of the votes in not less than two-thirds of Nigeria’s states, depending on campaign effectiveness and political consolidation.
- Timing, 2027 as a Defining Constitutional Window
In conclusion:
It should be emphasized that 2027 may represent PGEJ’s only opportunity to complete his remaining constitutional tenure. This matters because elections require not only readiness and strategy, but also timing and political momentum.
However, I cannot dismiss, disregard or overemphasise the fact that naturally, competing in a political environment with a sitting president also brings additional challenges, including advantages tied to incumbency. Nonetheless, the combination of experience, renewed political identity, and inclusive leadership symbolism could create a strong basis for a credible campaign and the defeat of a sitting president.

On a final note, this footnote of my write-up is based purely on my personal knowledge and perspective as stated earlier. It is not intended to undermine any respected political leaders, and it does not seek to disrespect the sitting president. I hold profound respect for leaders and acknowledge their courage. I have presented my views with the expected level of decorum.
